I received the book from you today and the kids and I are thrilled!! They are fighting over it to see it first! I also passed the word about the wonderful history of Matthew Henson on to about 50 more teachers at a presentation at our state middle level conference. Most had not heard or did not know all the details of this wonderful and couragous man. You may receive e-mail from them because I did include your website address. I also told them to e-mail or write to TNT to try to get this movie put on video or shown on TV again. Maybe this collabrative effort will allow us to get more copies and more knowledge out there. If I can help in any other way please let me know! I believe this story has much to teach our young people about honor and how we treat people, our country, and ourselves. Thank you again! The kids are currently working on drawings and I hope to send some out next week! Sincerely, Desha Bierbaum Desha Bierbaum 960 E. Parker, Hamburg, AR 71646 bierbaum@hca.sesc.k12.ar.us (501)853.8346 |

SUBMIT comments: After watching the movie, Glory and Honor, my students had the following questions: In the exhibition, were the Inuits waxed figures? If not, of what were the figures made? Why did the fires in the igloos, not melt the igloos? As a result of the movie, my classes had a discussion about prejudice and who it hurt in the movie. The obvious answer that most responsed with was that it hurt Henson. There were a few that saw how prejudice hurt Peary in his ability to learn and experience the world around him. I just wish this information was around when I was younger. This will give young African American the courage and knowledge to believe in themselves and their heritage as contributors to something positive in the United State of American. Thank You again. You wanted to know where I heard that it was his uncle. It was at http://tqd.advanced.org/3337/mhenson.html I hope that this helps a little. If you find out which one of his relatives it was, I would also like to know. |

Congratulations are in order for such a wonderful, organized, informative website. Having seen "Glory and Honor" on TNT last night, I was moved to learn more about these men(Henson and Peary). Being an astro/numerologist, I was mainly curious about their birthdays. For example, I understand the birthday of explorer Robert E. Peary is May 6, 1856, making him a Taurus 6 person. Ironically, the sign of Taurus is also ruled by the number "6". Also, the name "Robert" has "6" letters. And would you believe the last name of the now acknowledge co-discover of the North Pole, "Henson" has "6" letters in his last name. Interesting enough, there was a scene in the movie, when he and his wife had made the first trek to the North Pole. He told her something to the effect that ever since he was "6" years old, he dreamed of doing that. Furthermore the official date of finally reaching the North Pole was on the "6th" of April 1909. I'm sure there is more. I made a point of printing the website for further research. However, I do have a most important question that will help me. What was the "death date" of Robert E. Peary. And, was both the "birthday and death date" of Matthew A. Henson. If I could get that information, I ever be so thankful. Again, congratulations are in order for such a fine and informative website. We went out to Friendly's (Ingrid's choice) for Ingrid's 9th birthday. While we were there, a heavy fog set in, so we picked up another car and drove my mother home. I only got to see the second hour, and thought that that was it.. but NO!! I'd forgotten that TNT plays its originals about a hundred times in a row. I watched the second one from beginning to end (while running a printing job).. Is it me or did they mix the Greenland expedition in with one of the polar trips? It seems to me that they mixed a couple of them together, and when they edited it, they didn't have footage to match everything together right, hence Henson ends up in the igloo recuperating and Peary just disappeared. Other than that, not bad. They certainly played Peary for a dolt, but a case could be made. Seems a lot of revisionism in the racism part. Your father's portrayal of their relationship seemed a lot more human and real. Not surprising in that Matt was the source. And of course the scene where Mrs. Peary blows into town to find a pregnant Innuit woman in her husband's cabin seems outrageously fictional. I can't factor that one into the timeline as presented in Dark Companion, but it's the movies, right? That Peary had some Nanucki is I guess obvious, if the subsequent histories are even close, but how did Mrs. Peary get there, if not on the ship? And then she has it out with the old man and splits somehow... ?? hunh? Ah well, at least they didn't have soap flakes obviously blown by a fan.. The Ft. Condom scene is nearly as i envisioned it based on the book.. |
