The exhausted look of 1,000 stressful miles dashing to the Pole and back. According to Peary's diary he suffered from a type of post-traumatic stress. Peary recorded that every time he began to fall asleep for weeks after returning to the ship he would wake up startled, thinking he was falling through the treacherous Arctic ice and drowning in the frigid waters.
