Matthew Henson Library
Section 3 – Short biographies and grade school to young adult reading level
Note: I have purchased most of these books in order to review them. They run the gamut of educational requirements from 32 page kids books to the fine, library quality Arctic Explorer by Jeri Ferris. The Michael Gilman paperback, Matthew Henson: Arctic Explorer, is a delightful bargain for $3 -( these should be purchased by the case and given away to your students). Some offer excellent photograph collections, such as Jean Kinney Williams Matthew Henson: Polar Adventurer.

Matthew Henson : Co-Discoverer of the North Pole (African-American Biographies)
by Laura Baskes Litwin

Reading level: Young Adult
Library Binding - 128 pages (April 2001)
Enslow Publishers, Inc.; ISBN: 0766015467 ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.52 x 9.26 x 6.36

A very exciting story of a great African-American, November 18, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from Chicago, IL USA

This is really a perfect book. Skilful writing draws one into Matt's struggle beginning with the nearly fatal 1906 attempt to reach the Pole. Litwin will have you hooked from the first chapter. Then she tells the full Henson story with a fascination for this gentle, superhuman legend. It is generously illustrated from beginning to end (unlike the old system where all the pictures were grouped in one place). She used many restored photos showing the historical details of Eskimos, arctic hunting, and of Matt himself. In perspective, Laura baskes Litwin has produced the best biography of Henson since Dolan's benchmark biography in 1979. Dolan's well-written tribute to the amazing and legendary explorer had never been equaled. Until now that is. Litwin has captured the essence of Matthew Henson in an update to Dolan. This achievement includes presentation of the "new" events: Henson's reinterment at Arlington, his Navy research ship (USNS Henson), and even the unexpected scientific proofs, from the Navigation Foundation, that Peary & Henson did, in fact, reach all the way to the North Pole. Author Litwin provides chapter-by-chapter bibliographic references. These will serve as a rich source of inspiration for students to pursue additional research. That point is significant because this is a high school to college level work. This is long overdue in a full field of 5th grade level readers. Overall it is very well constructed, well written and researched with satisfying depth to the content. This is a "power book" on Henson - lean, strong muscle just as he was. It rewards one for learning to read in the first place! Truly scholarly for the intended age group - yet a first rate biography by all standards. Hats off on this one!

Top quality book for grade school level

The durable library binding makes this a worthwhile investment for schools. The graphics are just beautiful! The sepia toned photos are set in a color scheme of rich red and soft gold. Lovely!

The quality of the writing leaves nothing to criticize. This is a well researched, accurate account of the expeditions Henson and Peary undertook to reach the North Pole. Even the controversy over the attainment of the Pole is thoughtfully resolved by referencing the work of the Navigation Foundation and the historic 1990 report in the National Geographic.

This book uses 14 photographs from the Bradley Robinson Collection. (Hey! That's me!) The author, Ann Graham Gaines even listed this website in the "Further Information" section. Isn't that nice? This book is triumph of craftsmanship.

Fabulous photos and text!
Michael Gilman’s work is an excellent presentation of Henson for the younger reader. Almost one photo per page is used to illustrate the history from the 1880's to the end of Matthew Henson's life.

Henson has long been a favorite role model for children because of his rags to fame story. His humility shines through all the racist hatred people tossed at him for reaching the North Pole with Peary when they said Peary should have taken along a "white man". Today, there are efforts to attack Henson as the tide of racial equality shifts. Recently certain white supremacists feel safe in calling him a liar and Peary a fraud. However, there is ample scientific evidence supporting their 1909 North Pole achievement.

It was about racism then, and it is today. Struggles go on for basic human dignity and this is one of the noblest to uphold. We can all, as Americans, be proud that a black man wanted to be the first to stand on top of the world and he did it. Nothing can take that away.

*** I like this book! 58 pages of text - perfect for the young reader. Wonderful illustrations! Large color photos, such as Matt's Naval funeral at Arlington.
