| The guy T.C. is referring to in his drawing was
Verhoff, a man on one of Peary's very early expeditions who did not
like Matt because Matt was a Negro. But Matt was so nice a person that
he never held a grudge against him.

This shows how Matthew made it a point of honor to be part of the team that reached the North Pole - and not to stay behind so that Peary could claim the glory all to himself.
